> National Directory Institute

“Ordained for barely 18 months and as newly appointed directors, Kathy and I were faced with the daunting task of re-establishing the formation program after a diocesan wide pause in both recruitment and active formation. While we had inherited a substantial legacy from our predecessors, we were challenged by our Bishop with conducting a “makeover” which would bring the program more closely into compliance with the National Directory.
The NADD, and in particular, the NDI experience, provided us immediate access to the collective corporate knowledge of the formation world while providing an immersion in the theology, the language and norms of formation, all in an environment that permitted our mentors to convey the common sense and personal insights necessary to develop the personal confidence and the foundational preparation necessary to support the important work that followed.” -- Deacon John & Kathleen Coughlin, Co-directors of Permanent Deacon Formation, Diocese of Honolulu
“Thank you for helping me in my own formation as a director. The information, insights, and networking resources that you provided are valuable. I will depend on them as we continue to improve our program. “ -- Deacon Juan Cavazos, Diocese of Lubbock
“Well done! Thank you!” -- Deacon Kerry Blandford, Archdiocese of Indianapolis
“All aspects of the week were well conceived, planned and executed – curriculum, motel, transportation, food, liturgy, case studies – the whole works. Like everyone, I’ve attended countless seminars/institutes etc., and this one ranks as one of the very best.” -- Deacon Mike Sudnik, Diocese of Birmingham
“I found the week informative, insightful, and truly supportive of my work here in the Diocese of Harrisburg…The exchange of ideas and the materials given are solid.” -- Deacon Michael Grella, Diocese of Harrisburg, Pennsylvania
“I wouldn’t mind attending another NDI in the future just to be sure I’m on track with the Directory…what I’ve learned so far is great.”-- Mary Szymczak; Diocese of Fort Wayne – South Bend, Indiana
“The Columbus experience was very good for me. I have a better understanding of the National Directory and its applications… [NDI] was demanding but very fruitful.” -- Deacon Robert Lanter, Diocese of Belleville, Illinois
“Looking at the big picture, I believe this is one of the best things that NADD has ever done and it is likely to have a positive effect on the Permanent Diaconate for years to come.” -- Deacon David Eblen, Diocese of Fargo, North Dakota
“I believe the length was just right. It gave us an opportunity to consider all the areas of the Directory and how they could relate to our projects.”-- Deacon Alfredo Diaz, Diocese of Toledo, Ohio
“Prior to attending the NDI I knew that we needed to develop a set of directories for the Archdiocese of Atlanta that addressed both policies and procedures as well as a complete outline of the formation program.
Participation in the first NDI provided both the impetus to begin this project and access to incredible resources and talent to accomplish the task. While the project was ambitious, with the assistance and direction from the presenters and contacts made through the Directors Institute we were able to accomplish a working draft within the allotted time.
The energy and enthusiasm of the attendees, presenters, and organizers of the Institute was infectious. The friendships that were formed as a result of week in Columbus and the ongoing communication has created a wonderful resource base that I continue to tap as our program continues to evolve.
In my opinion the NDI has been the greatest benefit of our participation in the NADD.”
--Deacon Dennis J. Dorner, Chancellor, Director of Permanent Diaconate, Archdiocese of Atlanta
